Clearly not the most photogenic in the family…
Nice coincidence that this was a light week on the schedule as I was going to need to ease back in anyway. On Monday the foot survived but hurt for the duration of the 4 miles. But it actually felt better when I woke up on Tuesday. Wednesday’s run was bothersome but better yet. Friday I almost made it through the whole run without thinking about my foot at all and by Saturday I’d say I was back to near 100%. Those Air Pegasus+ 29 kicks are like running on clouds. Definitely lost a bit during the time off but hoping to catch back up quickly - so far so good!
The right ankle/foot is not healing quickly at all. It’s more of a compression injury than a turn. Just kinda sucks. I did not run at all this week. Couldn’t have if I wanted to early in the week. Later in the week it was more a precaution, don’t want to rush back and do more harm than good. New shoes are in and feel like walking on clouds, will see how they feel running in on Monday. I think I’m at the point where this is gonna nag for a while but I won’t hurt it further by running. We shall see. The schedule this week is light so hopefully I’ll just ease back in and not be too far behind. Worst case scenario - cut the damn thing off and get a bionic foot!
The good news, I ran the full schedule! Been a long time since I ran 34 miles in a week. I consider that and a 10 miler to be somewhat of accomplishments in and of themselves.
Bad news? Too much too quickly perhaps. My right ankle and upper/outer arch arriving at the ankle are very pissed off. Also I had a bit of a theory that if I ran on minimal shoes I’d be better off in the long run. Seemed to be working out until last week - again perhaps too much too soon. In any event I am taking a few days off from training and have some new cushy shoes - Air Pegasus+ 29 - in route after talking with folks at the running shop. Will still work the minimals - Free Run+ 2 - in on some of the shorter runs. Here’s to a speedy recovery and then onwards and upwards!!
Clearly I’ve lost my mind. Run a marathon? Crazy talk!
I’ve always said running a marathon is something I would like to do. A bucket list item if you will. My legs aren’t getting any younger and I’m in dire need of a ‘win’ outside of work these days so lets give it a shot! It’s gonna take a lot of discipline and and a healthy reduction in beer consumption but I think I can do it.
This plan was actually hatched some time ago. I had talked to my buddy Doug in Chicago last fall about all of the marathons he’s been running and asked for some guidance. There was probably a fair amount of beer talking for me during these conversations but that didn’t stop a training plan from arriving in my inbox early this year. In a fit of optimism I registered for the Portland Marathon so here we are…
I’ve got some miles on my legs over the last few months but not near the ‘ramp up’ plan. There will definitely be some catch up required. The official training plan begins tomorrow. I will update this site with progress each week. Keep me honest!
As far as goals go, I’m just trying to finish and not get injured. I would be over the moon happy with anything sub 4 hours.
What happens when you’re someone who is completely burned out at work, loves beer, and has an underutilized car? Road trip!
I had actually been wanting to do a drive down the 101 for quite some time and it did not disappoint. Stunning scenery, winding roads, and tall cliffs dropping into the ocean. Ross burned me a bunch of Metallica discs so I could rock out as I went - perfect for the burned out aspect (no pun intended). By the time I got back I was listening to Beach House so I think the trip was a success. I only got pulled over once! My trusty Mazda3 has driven over both the Golden Gate and Bay bridges! I only almost hit three deer and two elk!
My favorite and most unexpected part of the trip was discovering that the annual ‘Bay to Breakers’ race was happening in San Francisco at about the same time I would be there. I discovered this after an evening of drinking at Rogue in Newport. Drunken fantasies turned into a last minute registration, literally an hour before registration for the race closed. I hadn’t run more than 5 miles yet this year but had been running consistently. A fun 12k was a perfect stretch for me at that moment.
I ended up stopping at 18 honest to goodness breweries and a couple tap houses. Lots of fun conversations were had and I have a whole new set of glasses due to buying a pint glass at just about every stop. It’s hard to believe but you actually can overdose on good beer and pub food. Upon returning home all I wanted was seafood and wine for the next week.
In lieu of being too verbose I’ll just break down the trip to some ‘best of’ bullet points. Curious about anything else? Let’s meet down at the pub and have a chat about it over a beer…
Plan your trip carefully. I did the 18 breweries over 10 nights as to not actually be driving under the influence!
This is right before a pterodactyl swooped down and mauled me…
No vacation is complete without a new profile picture.
The day was October 31, 2008. I was at a bar/restaurant called Cellars in Belltown with a couple friends. The usual halloween mayhem was going on around us but we weren’t partaking, just grabbing a couple beers after a long week at work. A couple rounds in it was time to visit the bathroom. What did I see upon my arrival? Batman doing a line of coke off the toilet. That was the day Batman died.
I had always wondered why that image bothered me in addition to being hilarious. Then I unearthed this picture of the Pecott siblings getting ready to go out trick-or-treating back when we were kids…
Really, I do. Hold me to it. At least 1 post a week. This site is meant to be my identity on the net and I need to do a better job updating it. I’ve had all sorts of other accounts on social sites and other spots that would rather they own my data and my identity. Not anymore.
That’s not to say I’m burning the whole thing down. I still loves me some twitter and for some reason I feel compelled to keep linkedin. Maybe I’ll write up a post about where I end up at in terms of my ‘own your data’ crusaide but for now I just wanted to say hi. I’m still alive and you’ll be hearing more from me soon!
